Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book in advance?

We always recommend booking online in advance, especially in July and August, to guarantee your place on board. In high season, places sell out quickly.

Is the Berlengapass (ICNF) fee included?

No. The Berlengapass fee is not included in the ticket price. You must register at berlengaspass.icnf.pt before your visit.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my trip?

If the cancellation is by BerlengaTur (bad weather, breakdown), you will receive a full refund. If you cancel, a refund is only given with 24 hours’ prior notice.

How early should I be at the stand?

You must be at Stand 3 at the Marina de Peniche 40 minutes before boarding time. We are not responsible for delays that result in missing boarding.

Can I bring children or pets?

Children are welcome (special prices available per pack). Berlenga Island is a natural reserve — pets are not allowed, except guide dogs.

Is there parking at Peniche Marina?

Yes, there is paid parking next to our stand (€2 per 5 hours). From 15 July to 10 August, access may be limited due to Peniche festivities.

Is BerlengaTur a certified and licensed operator?

Yes. BerlengaTur has operated since 2011 with license RNAAT No. 102/11, issued by Portugal’s National Register of Tourist Animation Agents. Our vessels are inspected by the Maritime Authority and we comply with all ICNF requirements to operate within the Berlenga Natural Reserve.

What are the main attractions of Berlenga Island?

Berlenga Island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1981. Top attractions include the sea caves (Cova do Sonho and Gruta Azul), the 17th-century Fort of São João Baptista, the lighthouse, crystal-clear beaches and rich marine life — ideal for snorkeling. It is one of Portugal’s most pristine coastal destinations.

What is the total cost to visit Berlenga Island by boat?

BerlengaTur boat ticket: €25–€45 (adult) depending on the package. Add the compulsory BerlengasPass ICNF access fee (~€7/adult, ~€3.50/child), purchased separately at berlengaspass.icnf.pt. Parking at Peniche Marina: €2 per 5 hours.

What is the best time of year to visit Berlenga Island?

BerlengaTur operates April to October. June and September offer the best balance of good weather and fewer crowds. In July and August, the legal limit of 350 visitors per day is reached quickly — book online in advance.

Is Berlenga Island suitable for families with children?

Yes. Children receive reduced prices on all packages and babies travel free in low and mid season. The ~40-minute catamaran crossing is smooth and suitable for all ages. We recommend sunscreen, hats and water.

Which pack to choose for visiting the Berlenga Islands?

All our packs include the round-trip crossing from Peniche to the Berlenga Island on the BerlengaTur catamaran and about 4 hours on the island. The difference lies in the experiences included. The BerlengaPass fee (ICNF) is mandatory and purchased separately: 3€ per adult, 1.50€ for ages 6–18 and over 65, free under 6 (registration required).

Pack 1 – Round Trip (25€)

The simplest and most economical option: round-trip crossing and complete free time on the island for the beach, the trails and the fort. Ideal for those who want flexibility or travel with very young children.

Pack 2 – Round Trip + Caves (35€)

Our most balanced pack. It includes the visit to the sea caves on the glass-bottom boat — children's favourite experience — plus free time on the island. The right choice for most visitors.

Pack 3 – Round Trip + Caves + Guided Tour (40€)

For those who want to go deeper: it includes everything in Pack 2 plus a guided tour with historical and environmental context of the Biosphere Reserve. Perfect for the curious and nature lovers.

Pack 4 – Round Trip + Caves + Snorkelling (45€)

The most complete and immersive experience. It adds to the caves a snorkelling session in the crystal-clear waters around the island, in one of the cleanest oceans in Europe. Ideal for adventurers and sea lovers.

How to choose?

If it's your first visit, Pack 2 offers the best balance. For the richest experience, choose Pack 4. Book in advance, especially in July and August — places and the BerlengaPass sell out fast.
