Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro is the beach of Berlenga Grande — small, tucked between rocks and facing the sheltered side of the island. That is why the sea here is usually far calmer than on the north and west coasts, which take the full force of the Atlantic.

The water is clear enough to see the bottom several metres down, and the temperature follows the sea at Peniche: cool in spring, milder in August and September.

The beach sits right by the landing point, a few minutes’ walk from where the boats dock. It is the most accessible spot on the island — no trails to climb and no long walk — which makes it practical for families with children or anyone with reduced mobility.

Snorkelling from the beach

The natural shelter of the cove and the clarity of the water make this the best entry point for snorkelling on the island. The rocky seabed around it holds abundant marine life, typical of a reserve where fishing is restricted.
